A documentary film about a civil resistance movement in Chiapas, incorporated into the collaborative research process of a young anthropologist.
Depuis 2017, Umberto Cao travaille à la réalisation d’un film documentaire consacré au mouvement de résistance civile « Luz y Fuerza del Pueblo » (Chiapas, Mexique). Ce mouvement aussi est le sujet de la thèse qu’il poursuit actuellement sous la direction de Valeria Siniscalchi (Centre Norbert Elias/EHESS) en co-tutelle avec l’Université de Milano Bicocca. Le film est une partie intégrante d’une démarche méthodologique visant à une forme d’ethnographie collaborative, dans laquelle les acteurs locaux sont impliqués activement même dans la lecture et l’interprétation du « texte » ethnographique. Les images du documentaire ont bien sûr le but de transmettre à des publics distants et non spécialistes, les vicissitudes quotidiennes, les réseaux d’entraide, les visions de la vie, les sentiments, les aspirations et les rêves des gens sur le terrain. Mais premièrement, elles veulent se poser comme un miroir interactif sur lequel les acteurs locaux peuvent librement se confronter avec une pluralité de narrations et représentations concernant leur existence.
Umberto Cao is currently shooting a new documentary about a civil resistance movement from Chiapas (Mexico) named « Luz y Fuerza del Pueblo« , which is also the subject of the PhD research he is carrying out under the supervision of Valeria Siniscalchi, in cotutelle with the University of Milano Bicocca. The film is a core part of a methodological effort towards a more collaborative form of ethnography, with the local actors not just asked for information, but actively involved also in the process of reading and interpreting the ethnographic « text ». For sure, the images mean to convey far and non-specialist audiences, their everyday hardships, problem solving strategies, mutual support networks, life visions, political understandings, feelings, aspirations and desires. But firstly and foremost, they aim to act as an interactive mirror where local people may freely play with the own (and the others) visions, narratives and representations about themselves and their reality.
Umberto Cao est doctorant en anthropologie, en cotutelle entre l’Université de Milano Bicocca et l’EHESS Marseille. Après un Master en Santé, Population et Politiques Sociales à l’EHESS, il a travaillé plusieurs années dans le domaine de la coopération éducative. Il s’est ensuite intéressé à l’anthropologie visuelle, avec des projets vidéo et photographiques portant sur le muralisme contemporain, en collaboration notamment avec les artistes Crisa et Congiu. Le premier documentaire qu’il a coréalisé, Nodas. Les launeddas au temps de la crise a été sélectionné dans de nombreux festivals internationaux, parmi lesquels l’édition 2015 du PriMed – Festival de la Méditerranée en Images et le 15e Festival du Cinéma du Royal Anthropological Institute.
Umberto Cao is PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Milano Bicocca and EHESS Marseille. Graduated in Medical Anthropology at EHESS, he has worked several years in the educational cooperation field. He eventually addressed his interest on visual anthropology, with photo and video projects on contemporary murals, in special collaboration with the artists Crisa and Congiu. The first documentary he co-directed entitled Nodas. Launeddas at the time of crisis has been officially selected in numerous international film festivals, such as the 2015 edition of the PriMed – International Festival of Mediterranean Documentary and Reportage and the 15th Royal Anthropological Institute Film Festival.
